Myka Green, a dedicated volunteer with the American Red Cross of San Diego and Imperial Counties, has been named November 2025 Volunteer of the Month for her tireless work supporting military service members, families, and veterans at Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton. As a military spouse and daughter of service members, Green channels her personal experiences into compassionate service through the Services to the Armed Forces program. Her recognition highlights the vital role volunteers play in bridging gaps for those who serve, especially in understaffed hospital departments facing high demands.
Roots in Military Service and Global Humanitarian Roots
Green's path to the Red Cross began in 2014 during a summer break, when she volunteered with the Japanese Red Cross in Japan, promoting blood donations at train stations and interning in blood processing centers. This early exposure drew her to the organization's worldwide reach and humanitarian legacy, which traces back to its founding in 1863 to aid war victims and has since expanded to disaster relief, health services, and armed forces support. Reconnecting earlier this year, Green focused on the Services to the Armed Forces program, motivated by her own benefits from military support, including tuition-free education at UC Berkeley through her father's Navy service and a scholarship for medical assistant training.
Hands-On Impact at Camp Pendleton Naval Hospital
Green serves multiple shifts weekly in the Patient Relations Department at Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton, offering office support, informing hospital teams about behavioral health programs, deployment resources, and Women, Infants, and Children opportunities. She onboarded the Red Cross WIC program there, aided the Medical Professional Volunteer team, and follows up with families after emergency communications via the Hero Care Center. Fellow volunteers praised her empathy and leadership, noting how she provides emergency support to military families. One defining moment came at a spousal resource event, where a woman shared how Red Cross services enabled her husband's emergency leave during deployment and supported her family through WIC—direct evidence of Green's contributions in action.
Aspiring Physician Committed to Long-Term Service
Accepted into medical school, Green aims to become a physician serving the military community, addressing shortages in hospital departments she witnesses daily. She participates in base engagement events, community outreach like Sound the Alarm for emergency preparedness, and Save a Life initiatives to build partnerships. Her supervisor, Angela Fie, has guided her toward roles aligning with these goals. Green values the Red Cross for its diverse opportunities matching any skill set and the inspiring community of passionate volunteers, urging others to join for tangible local and global impact.
